From Seed to Seedling – How We Prepare Avocado Seeds at
Golden Grove Avocados Farm
Welcome to Golden Grove Avocados Farm where every great avocado tree begins
with a well prepared seed.
At Golden Grove, we believe that strong roots grow from quality beginnings. The
process of preparing avocado seeds is essential in ensuring a healthy,
productive orchard. Below is a detailed explanation of how we prepare our seeds
until they reach the nursery stage.
1. Selection of Parent Trees
We begin by identifying healthy,
high-yielding avocado trees from which to source our fruits. These trees are
disease free, vigorous, and productive ensuring that the seeds have strong
genetic potential.
2. Harvesting and Extracting the Seeds
Once mature avocados are harvested, we
carefully extract the seeds. We ensure no damage occurs to the seed coat. Any
flesh (pulp) is cleaned off gently using fresh water.
3. Drying and Storage Before Germination
Seeds are air-dried for 24–48 hours in a
cool shaded area. This prevents fungal infections and prepares the seed for
germination.
4. Germination Process
We use two main germination techniques:
- Water Germination Method: We suspend the seed in water using toothpicks,
allowing the bottom to touch the water. After 2–6 weeks, roots and a shoot
emerge.
- Direct Soil Germination: Seeds are planted in loose, moist soil in nursery
trays or seedbeds. The broad end faces down while the top remains exposed.
5. Caring for Germinating Seeds
During germination, we provide regular watering,
shading from strong sunlight, and monitor for pests or diseases.
6. Transplanting to Nursery Bags
Once seedlings reach 15–30 cm in height and
develop healthy roots, we transplant them into nursery bags filled with
nutrient-rich loamy soil. These bags are labeled and spaced appropriately.
7. Nursery Management
Our nursery is carefully managed with:
- Regular watering
- Mulching to conserve moisture
- Pest and disease control
- Shade netting to reduce sun stress
Why This Matters
Seed preparation is the foundation of a
thriving avocado farm. At Golden Grove, we are committed to growing healthy
avocado trees that produce high-quality fruit for future generations.
