THE CHICKEN STORY

                                                  THE CHICKEN STORY

A Heartwarming Tale from Golden Grove

Nestled in the gentle green hills of Golden Grove Avocado Farm, a special flock of chickens is bringing life, peace, and joy to the land. More than just animals, these chickens are our companions — living reminders that when we care for nature, nature cares for us.

Every morning, our hens greet the day with song and movement, roaming freely beneath the shade of our avocado trees. They eat natural food, drink clean water, and enjoy the freedom to live well. In return, they help fertilize the land and keep pests away.

Their golden-yolked eggs are symbols of health, balance, and happiness. Our chickens are raised with love cage-free, stress-free, and in full harmony with the land.

Visitors to Golden Grove often smile when they hear the soft clucks and see the hens wandering proudly through the grove. Children laugh. Elders nod in approval. Farmers beam with pride.

This is how we believe farming should be: respectful, natural, and kind.

At Golden Grove, even the chickens tell a beautiful story.

Feeding the future one Avocado at a Time

🐐 Farmer’s Diary: Raising Livestock the Golden Grove Way

From Emmanue GATOYA, Founder – Golden Grove Avocados Farm, Rwanda

Every morning at Golden Grove begins with the same rhythm  not the sound of machines or engines, but the soft bleating of goats, the gentle cluck of hens, and the fresh scent of dew on avocado leaves. It’s in these quiet, early hours that I’m reminded why I started this farm.

When people hear “Golden Grove,” they often think of our avocado orchards. But for me, the heart of the farm lies just beyond the trees  in our livestock pastures, where we raise goats and chickens using methods passed down from elders, refined through experience, and guided by a deep respect for the land.

🐐 The Goats That Feed the Grove

Our goats aren’t just livestock  they are partners in a larger ecosystem. Here in Rwanda, goats are a staple in rural households, but at Golden Grove, we’ve gone beyond traditional practices.

We breed small East African goats known for their hardiness, low feed requirements, and resistance to disease. Rather than keeping them in confined sheds, we allow them to graze rotationally on native grasses and legume patches planted between avocado rows. This keeps the soil fertile, reduces bush overgrowth, and minimizes feed costs.

Their manure is collected weekly and added to our compost system — a natural fertilizer for our avocado trees. This closes the nutrient loop and eliminates our reliance on chemicals.

🐓 Chickens: The Pest Control and Protein Source

Our chickens serve many roles. They are our insect control team, scratching through orchard beds and eating larvae that damage fruit. We raise local Kinyarwanda breeds for both meat and eggs, chosen for their ability to thrive in free-range conditions.

Instead of antibiotics and synthetic feed, we supplement their diet with kitchen scraps, insects, and homemade grain blends. Happy chickens mean healthier eggs  which we sell locally and donate to nearby schools.

🔄 Sustainability as a System, Not a Buzzword

What we’ve built here isn’t a farm in isolation  it’s a living system. Every animal, tree, and person plays a role. We’ve learned to observe nature’s cycles and work with them instead of against them. This includes:

  • Rainwater harvesting for animal drinking troughs

  • Herbal treatments for animal health instead of expensive medicines

  • Low-cost goat shelters made from eucalyptus poles and banana fiber

  • Training sessions with local youth on animal care and breeding

👣 Lessons from the Land

There were challenges, of course. Diseases, droughts, and financial uncertainty have all knocked on our door. But each challenge forced us to adapt, to listen more closely to the land, and to lead with knowledge, not shortcuts.

One of the most important lessons? You can’t rush growth. Whether it's avocados, goats, or people — the best results come with time, care, and commitment.

🌍 From Our Farm to Yours

If you're a farmer reading this, know that sustainable livestock farming doesn’t require expensive machines or imported breeds. It starts with observation, intention, and respect for what’s already around you. That’s the Golden Grove way  and it’s a path open to anyone willing to walk it.

Stay tuned for the next diary entry  I’ll be sharing how we manage breeding, keep track of animal health, and build resilience during dry seasons.

Until then, from our green grove in Rwanda to your farm… murakoze cyane (thank you very much).

Emmanuel GATOYA

🌿 Golden Grove: How a Rwandan Avocado Farm is Growing More Than Just Fruit

Nestled in the fertile hills of Rwanda’s Southern Province, Golden Grove Avocados Farm is more than just rows of green trees bearing the country’s “green gold.” It’s a symbol of how sustainable agriculture can uplift communities, nurture the land, and even redefine livestock farming in the heart of Africa.

When Emmanuel GATOYA founded Golden Grove, he had a clear vision: to create a farm that not only produced high-quality Hass avocados for export, but also served as a living example of regenerative farming and ethical livestock management.

“Too many farms in Rwanda depend on quick results,” Emmanuel says, standing beneath the shade of a thriving avocado tree. “But our goal was to think beyond the harvest  to heal the soil, feed the people, and teach the next generation of farmers.”

🌱 A Circular Model: Avocados Meet Livestock

What sets Golden Grove apart is its integrated farming model. Alongside the lush avocado orchards roam flocks of free-range chickens and goats  carefully bred not only for productivity but for resilience and adaptation to Rwanda’s climate.

The goats are raised on native forage, contributing to a zero-waste cycle. Their manure is composted and used to nourish the avocado trees, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. The chickens, meanwhile, control pests naturally while providing fresh eggs and meat for local markets.

“Our animals are part of the ecosystem, not separate from it,” Emmanuel explains. “We don’t overbreed, and we focus on the health of the soil, the animals, and the farmers.”

🌍 Educating for Impact

Golden Grove also serves as a demonstration site for local farmers, especially youth and women’s cooperatives, who come to learn about sustainable practices from grafting avocado trees to building low-cost animal shelters using local materials.

The farm has partnered with agricultural extension officers and NGOs to train over 300 farmers across the region. Many of them now replicate the methods they’ve learned, improving food security while protecting Rwanda’s rich natural environment.

💡 From Rwanda to the World

Golden Grove’s avocados are now being shipped to European and Middle Eastern markets, creating jobs and generating income for rural families. But Emmanuel is most proud of the farm’s impact at home.

“When you walk through this farm, you don’t just see trees or animals  you see potential,” he says. “This land is alive. It gives back when you treat it with care.”

🌾 A Farm with a Future

As climate change challenges farmers across East Africa, Golden Grove Avocados Farm is proof that innovation rooted in tradition can lead the way forward. It’s a place where avocados, goats, and good ideas grow side by side  and where sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, but a way of life.
